Residents and activists of Staten Island and the Far Rockaways protested outside Mayor Bloomberg’s residence on Saturday night demanding that the city speed up recovery efforts and to also bring attention to the fact that there are still thousands of families living in mold infested homes without heat or electricity. Although the protesters were very vocal they were peaceful and yet the NYPD managed to find some reason to arrest demonstrators.

I have covered the Occupy movement in and around the NYC area for the last year and this was the first time I had ever seen anyone at any Occupy event I was at try and burn an American flag. She had a hard time doing it because the flag was apparently flame retardant but that gave people around this woman enough time to disavow her actions and then grab the flag from her.

#OWS held a rally yesterday in solidarity with worldwide protests called #globalnoise. I didn’t get to stay long but on my way out of Columbus Circle I got this shot of NYPD riot police taking some time out from monitoring the protest to pose with these newlyweds which was carefully composed by the couples personal photographer who seemed amazed by the amount of press that swarmed around him to get his miraculously posed shot.
